Dam of 2-Length Bongard S. Upset Winner Jackson Heights Carrying Foal by Multiple G1 Sire Freud

By Rab Hagin

SEQUEL STALLIONS has a long tradition of breeding stakes winners by home stallions from overlooked mares other breeders might have given up on, and the dams of 2022 stakes winners by UNION JACKSON – 3-year-old filly KISSES FOR EMILY and 2-year-old colt JACKSON HEIGHTS – are prime examples. The latter mare, QUEEN OF THE NIGHT (GB), whose seventh offspring and first black-type earner is relentless Bertram F. Bongard Stakes closer Jackson Heights of Zilla Racing Stables, Black Jack Racing, LLC, and Acqua Nova Stable, is pregnant to Sequel’s iconic stallion, FREUD. Placing behind Jackson Heights in the $121,250 seven-furlong Bongard at Belmont at the Big A on September 29 were sons of the current top-five North American third-crop sire (second) and a sire of three Eclipse Champions.

Sequel Stallions New York bred Jackson Heights and consigned him as agent to Fasig-Tipton’s 2021 Saratoga sale of New York-bred yearlings, where he was purchased for $70,000 by Zilla Racing Stables.

Freud, whose New York-sired progeny earnings record of more than $6.3-million (set in 2017) might stand for decades, is the only Northeastern-based stallion ever to sire Grade 1-winning millionaires on both dirt and turf, or to sire a million-dollar-plus sales offspring, or to sire a successful sire. His Grade 1-winning millionaires FOURSTAR CROOK ($1,624,566) and SHARP AZTECA ($2,406,740) were both the first stakes winners produced from winless mares. Sharp Azteca is currently the leading North American sire of first-crop 2-year-old winners in 2022, with 21 juvenile winners to date – five more first-crop winners in 2022 than represent the 2018 Triple Crown winner – with stakes winners on dirt and turf.

Like the dam of Freud’s Grade 1 winner GIANT RYAN, Queen of The Night (GB) is a daughter of a Northern Dancer-line stallion

Freud also is a Grade 1 broodmare sire whose daughters have produced black-type stakes winners on dirt, turf, and all-weather, including Grade 1 Keeneland track record-setter SPEECH.

Through one and two generations, Freud’s legacy lives on.
